How do I enter the General Carpenter trade?
Ontario’s registered apprenticeship combines paid workplace learning, three levels of in-school training and a certifying exam.

THE PATHWAY
From first layout to Red Seal
Prepare
Build mathematics, drawing, communication and safe-work foundations. Ask about co-op, OYAP, SHSM and dual credits.
Find a sponsor
An Ontario sponsor may be an employer, union or group responsible for apprenticeship training.
Register
Register a Training Agreement through Ontario’s apprenticeship system.
Train
Complete signed-off workplace competencies and 720 hours of in-school training across three levels.
Certify
Complete the apprenticeship and pass the certifying exam for an Ontario Certificate of Qualification and Red Seal endorsement.
Advance
Develop specialty, supervisory, estimating, project-management or business skills as your goals require.

Turn interest into supervised practice

ONTARIO ENTRY PICTURE
Prepare for the apprenticeship route
Ontario apprenticeship applicants must be at least 16.
Have legal permission to work in Canada.
Meet the education requirement for the apprenticeship route.
Secure an Ontario apprenticeship sponsor.
Confirm current eligibility and documentation directly with Skilled Trades Ontario before registering.
CERTIFICATION
Apprenticeship → exam → Certificate of Qualification + Red Seal
General Carpenter is a non-compulsory Ontario trade, so certification is not generally required merely to practise it. The trade has a certifying exam; successful candidates receive an Ontario Certificate of Qualification and Red Seal endorsement.
COSTS & SUPPORT
Check current programs before budgeting.
Possible costs include tools, safety footwear and clothing, travel, books, exam fees and income changes during in-school blocks. Supports change and eligibility is personal.
