Not every Surface Blaster performs every task. The mix changes with the employer, sector, workplace, equipment and level of responsibility.
- Assesses the pre-blast area and site, controls the blast area, designs and implements the blast, loads blast holes, hooks up and initiates shot and assesses blast results
WORKING CONDITIONS
Understand the environment
explosives and strict legal controls; flyrock, vibration, dust and noise hazards; outdoor work in remote terrain; heavy drilling and loading equipment; absolute accountability for exclusion zones.
SAFETY FIRST
Learn the hazards before the task
Training, supervision, safe procedures, appropriate PPE and stopping when conditions are uncertain are essential. Requirements vary by workplace and assignment.

Mine bench blasting
Design and load patterns for surface-resource extraction.
Construction blasting
Excavate controlled cuts, foundations, trenches and infrastructure routes.
Controlled perimeter blasting
Use presplit, cushion or trim techniques to protect final rock faces.
Vibration and air-overpressure control
Plan, monitor and document blast effects near structures and communities.
Blast leadership
Advance into design, permitting, supervision, training or technical consulting.
