What is the Steamfitter trade?

A Steamfitter lays out, assembles, maintains and repairs piping to carry water, steam, fluids, gases, chemicals and fuel for heating, cooling, lubricating and process piping systems. Specifically, a Steamfitter:

Not every Steamfitter performs every task. The mix changes with the employer, sector, workplace, equipment and level of responsibility.

reads and understands design drawings, manufacturers literature and installation diagrams
lays out, assembles, installs, maintains, and repairs heating, cooling, process or industrial systems
installs piping for any process, including a process that conveys gas or pneumatic or air-handling system
installs high-pressure piping for any process
installs and maintains instrumentation control systems

TOOLS & TECHNOLOGY

Tools used with judgment

pipe beveling, threading and grooving equipment, welding and brazing systems, precision layout, levels and laser instruments, rigging, hoists and pipe-positioning equipment, pressure-test pumps and commissioning instruments.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Understand the environment

high pressure, heat and hazardous process materials; heavy rigging and suspended piping; confined spaces and work at height; shutdowns, travel and extended shifts; strict permits, isolation and test procedures.

Learn the hazards before the task

Training, supervision, safe procedures, appropriate PPE and stopping when conditions are uncertain are essential. Requirements vary by workplace and assignment.

ADVANCED SPECIALIZATIONS

These are advanced work directions within or adjacent to Steamfitter, not promises of separate credentials or pay. Requirements vary by employer, equipment, experience and any additional training or authorization.

Steam and condensate systems

Install high- and low-pressure steam, traps, returns and associated equipment.

Process piping

Build systems carrying chemicals, fuels, gases, slurries and industrial fluids.

Power-generation piping

Work on boiler, turbine, feedwater and auxiliary plant systems.

Refrigeration and chilled-water piping

Install large mechanical piping systems for industrial and district cooling.

Medical and laboratory gases

Build clean, traceable piping systems where additional qualifications apply.

High-purity and specialty alloys

Control cleanliness, fit-up and joining for stainless and alloy systems.

Hydrostatic and pneumatic testing

Prepare, isolate, pressurize and document completed piping safely.

Shutdown and maintenance work

Replace valves, spools and equipment connections during plant outages.

Layout and supervision

Advance into field layout, planning, quality control or project leadership.
