Not every Saw Filer/Fitter performs every task. The mix changes with the employer, sector, workplace, equipment and level of responsibility.
- Maintains wood sawing machines in lumber or paper mills
- Files grooved, contoured and irregular surfaces of knives, saw blades and metal objects
- Repairs, sets and sharpens bandsaws, chainsaws, handsaws, circular saws and other types of saw blades
- Troubleshoots sawing machinery and analyzes faults for corrective or repair action
WORKING CONDITIONS
Understand the environment

Restore planer knives, chipper knives and related cutting systems.
Sawing-machine alignment
Troubleshoot guides, wheels, arbors and feed systems that affect the cut.
Carbide and stellite work
Apply and finish wear-resistant cutting materials for longer service life.
Performance analysis
Read cut quality, heat and wear patterns to correct blade or machine problems.
Filing-room leadership
Advance into head filer, maintenance planning, quality or technical service.
