What is the Powerline Technician trade?

A Powerline Technician constructs, maintains and repairs overhead and underground electrical power transmission and distribution systems and communication networks. Specifically, a Powerline Technician:

Not every Powerline Technician performs every task. The mix changes with the employer, sector, workplace, equipment and level of responsibility.

prepares work plans
installs, maintains and removes power system poles and maintains transmission towers and structures
installs and maintains overhead and underground power systems
splices and terminates conductors and related wiring to connect power distribution and transmission networks
troubleshoots overhead and underground power systems
installs, maintains and removes transformers and hardware
installs, operates and maintains system protection, control and instrumentation equipment and communications systems

TOOLS & TECHNOLOGY

Tools used with judgment

insulated aerial devices and climbing systems, live-line tools and rubber protective equipment, diggers, tensioners and pulling equipment, voltage detection, phasing and test instruments, rigging, grounding and conductor-handling equipment.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Understand the environment

energized electrical systems; significant heights and fall hazards; storms, heat, cold and remote terrain; night work and emergency restoration; heavy equipment and public traffic.

Learn the hazards before the task

Training, supervision, safe procedures, appropriate PPE and stopping when conditions are uncertain are essential. Requirements vary by workplace and assignment.

These are advanced work directions within or adjacent to Powerline Technician, not promises of separate credentials or pay. Requirements vary by employer, equipment, experience and any additional training or authorization.

Overhead distribution

Set poles and install conductors, transformers, switches and service equipment.

Underground distribution

Install, splice, terminate and test buried cable systems and vault equipment.

Transmission systems

Build and maintain high-voltage lines, towers, hardware and conductors.

Live-line maintenance

Use approved insulated-tool and rubber-glove methods on energized systems.

Substation and protection work

Support switching, grounding, control and protective equipment.

Storm restoration

Assess damage, isolate hazards and rebuild systems under emergency conditions.

Utility leadership

Advance into crew leadership, system operations, inspection or training.
