lays out, assembles, installs, maintains and repairs piping, fixtures and other components for the supply or disposal of water for any domestic or industrial purpose
connects any appliance that uses water
installs the piping for any process, including the conveyance of gas, or any tubing for a pneumatic or air-handling system
reads and understands design drawings, manufacturers’ literature, and installation diagrams for piping and appliances

pipe cutters, threaders and groovers, press-fit, soldering and brazing equipment, drain cameras and locating equipment, pressure, vacuum and backflow test instruments, layout lasers and digital measuring tools.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Understand the environment

confined and awkward work areas; water, waste and biological exposure; hot work and pressurized systems; ladders, trenches and active sites; emergency service and on-call work.

Training, supervision, safe procedures, appropriate PPE and stopping when conditions are uncertain are essential. Requirements vary by workplace and assignment.

Build larger systems for schools, hospitals, offices and public buildings.

Industrial and process piping

Install piping that supports manufacturing, treatment and production processes.

Service and diagnostics

Locate leaks, blockages, pressure problems and failed fixtures or equipment.

Backflow prevention

Install, test and maintain devices that protect potable-water systems.

Hydronic and water-heating systems

Work with boilers, pumps, controls, distribution piping and domestic hot water.

Contracting and supervision

Advance into estimating, inspection, project leadership or business ownership.
