A Pattern Maker:
Not every Pattern Maker performs every task. The mix changes with the employer, sector, workplace, equipment and level of responsibility.
- Reads and interprets complex engineering drawings, pattern drawings and work process documentation
- Designs and creates foundry patterns and core boxes from metal, wood, plastic and polystyrene for parts and components cast from metal
- Builds precision pattern tooling using wood and metal cutting machines and equipment, including saws, drills, grinders, lathes, mills and electrical discharge machines
- Performs work-in-process measuring and checking using specialized and precision tools and equipment
WORKING CONDITIONS
Understand the environment
wood, resin and composite dust; machine noise and cutting hazards; large patterns and material handling; dimensional allowances and exact geometry; one-off work requiring independent judgment.
SAFETY FIRST
Learn the hazards before the task
Training, supervision, safe procedures, appropriate PPE and stopping when conditions are uncertain are essential. Requirements vary by workplace and assignment.

Build stable, accurate tooling for sand moulds using traditional and modern materials.
Metal patterns
Machine durable production patterns for repeated foundry use.
Core boxes
Create tooling that forms internal casting cavities and complex passages.
Large industrial castings
Plan and build segmented patterns for heavy machinery, energy and infrastructure parts.
CAD/CAM and CNC patternmaking
Translate casting models into efficient machining and assembly strategies.
Pattern repair and modification
Update tooling for engineering changes, wear, shrinkage or foundry performance.
Tooling and foundry leadership
Advance into estimating, design liaison, inspection or pattern-shop supervision.
