A Blacksmith:
Not every Blacksmith performs every task. The mix changes with the employer, sector, workplace, equipment and level of responsibility.
- Forges and repairs metal parts used in farm machinery and industrial and domestic equipment
- Makes striking and cutting tools
- Makes, sharpening or hardening drills, chisels and other tools.
- Makes custom work, including ornamental railings, gates, grilles, furniture and horse shoes.
- Forges welding
- Conducts hot riveting
WORKING CONDITIONS
Understand the environment
extreme heat, sparks and scale; heavy hot material; noise and vibration; repetitive hammering and lifting; ventilation and fire-control requirements.
SAFETY FIRST
Learn the hazards before the task
Training, supervision, safe procedures, appropriate PPE and stopping when conditions are uncertain are essential. Requirements vary by workplace and assignment.

Architectural ironwork
Railings, gates, hardware and commissioned building elements.
Toolsmithing
Chisels, punches, hammers, axes and specialized hand tools.
Bladesmithing
Knives and edged tools with controlled forging, grinding and heat treatment.
Artistic forging
Sculpture, furniture, decorative objects and gallery commissions.
Restoration and conservation
Historically appropriate repair and reproduction of ironwork.
Equine and agricultural work
Specialized hardware, repair and traditional farm applications.
Independent forge business
Design, estimating, commissions, teaching and shop ownership.
